Three thoughts for the day:
- I am enamored with the iPhone. Yeah, Europe and Japan have some fantastic phones too, but I don’t think they compare on the design front. However, I can’t help but think that Apple must be having huge problems producing the iPhone. Why? Jobs and company typically have their products available within a very short time of the product announcement. For example, the original Macintosh was available two days after its iconic 1984 Super Bowl announcement, and the iPod was available a month after it was announced. The iPhone’s June market release is suspiciously long after its official Macworld announcement. Will some other companies take advantage of the delay and release their own iPhone clones? I hope so, if only because I have no interest in switching to Cingular.
- I got my first shutout in a league game last night! Granted, the match was lopsided, but I still had to stop 18 shots for the victory. It’s been a few years since my last “shutout,” but that didn’t really count because it wasn’t an official game. I am quite happy at the moment.
- xkcd is the greatest thing ever.
If you watch Steve Job’s address on the iPhone, he states that the FCC requires about six months of certification before it can be sold. He wanted Apple to introduce the phone, not the FCC. Hence the delay.
Perhaps that’s a fundamental problem with FCC approval. My company’s medical devices are approved by the FDA, and the approval letters are usually published before we announce the product. The difference is that the publically available FDA approval letters don’t say much more than “there was a product that was approved,” but the FCC approvals include everything from product photos to user manual copies.
The ill-conceived Motorola ROKR was approved by the FCC before it was officially announced. I’m not sure that an early announcement would have done it much good.
Maybe there is a shortage of the flash based memory that it will use. I also can’t wait for it to come out, but like you, I don’t want to switch to Cingular. Meh…we’ll see how it turns out
in the iPhone’s case it’s not a question of production, albeit challenging. it’s more a question of timing on the announcement and where apple is in the dev. cycle. they wanted to get out the anncouncement at macworld, this year wherever they were in the dev. cycle.
what do you guys think about it’s lack of 3rd party apps?
Hey Jeff, I think one thing that Jobs said is that with a $600 price tag they want to give people some time to absorb this and save up. I mean $600 is a lot for something that is primarily supposed to be for making calls. Its also the price of the PS3.
By the way, update your journal moe often!
Shutout in what sport?
Ice hockey. Woohoo!
Oh sweet, go you!!
