Recovery

May 2nd, 2006

I am in the process of setting up a new server to recover from a break-in. No data was lost. I have re-enabled this site first as a test.

Server break-ins are rough, from the looks of it you got really lucky. The worst one I ever dealt with took myself and 3 other people 8 solid hours of working to figure out *where* the problem was, let alone how to fix it. At first it seemed as if only one domain on the server was hosed, and then gradually we realized everything was, as Apache itself was screwed. To make it worse the symptoms appeared randomly, with every page load having a 10% chance of loading a virus in addition to the page, but it only worked in IE and was transparent. Ugh.

    Good luck finishing everything.

personally i really want to thank you for doing all this. i’m not sure if people know, but you basically serve people (me) without asking anything in return. i’ve been trying to come up with a way to thank you for a couple weeks now. i’ve gone from something BMW, to, now, something road-bikey. i have your address… sucker!!!

    Ha!

No, the Bimmer is injured but not beyond repair. The at-fault party had insurance, so I won’t be stuck with the bill.
